Frequently Asked Questions

Is a visa required to enter Thailand?+
This varies according to nationality. Passport holders from 93 countries benefit from visa-free entry for periods of 30 to 90 days, depending on bilateral agreements. Nationals of a further 31 countries may obtain a Visa on Arrival upon reaching a designated international port of entry, valid for 15 days at a fee of 2,000 THB. Please refer to the country tables above to confirm the arrangement applicable to your passport.
How does visa exemption differ from Visa on Arrival?+
Under visa exemption, no prior authorisation is required — travellers present their passport directly to the immigration officer upon arrival. The Visa on Arrival (VOA) scheme, by contrast, requires an application to be submitted at the designated counter within the arrival terminal. Applicants must pay a non-refundable fee of 2,000 THB in cash and present supporting documents, including a passport photograph, confirmed onward travel, and evidence of adequate funds. The VOA permits a single stay of 15 days and is not extendable under any circumstances.
Is it possible to extend a permitted stay in Thailand?+
Extension of stay is available to travellers who entered under the 60-day visa exemption. With effect from November 2025, a maximum of two extensions may be granted per calendar year: the initial extension prolongs the permitted stay by 30 days at a fee of 1,900 THB, while a subsequent extension adds a further 7 days. Holders of a Tourist Visa are eligible for one 30-day extension. Travellers admitted under the Visa on Arrival scheme are not entitled to any extension of stay.
Is the TDAC required even for visa-exempt travellers?+
Yes. Completion of the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is a mandatory requirement for all inbound passengers, irrespective of visa category or entry entitlement. The TDAC superseded the paper-based TM6 arrival and departure card in 2024 and must be submitted prior to boarding a flight bound for Thailand. Visa exemption does not constitute grounds for exemption from this obligation.
What are the consequences of overstaying an authorised period of stay?+
Remaining in Thailand beyond the authorised period of stay constitutes an immigration offence. A fine of 500 THB per day of overstay is imposed, subject to a statutory ceiling of 20,000 THB. Where the duration of overstay exceeds 90 days, graduated re-entry prohibitions apply: a ban of 1 year for overstays of 90 days or more; 3 years for overstays exceeding 1 year; 5 years for those exceeding 3 years; and 10 years for overstays of 5 years or more.
Are border runs permitted as a means of resetting visa-exempt status?+
Thai immigration authorities have adopted a more restrictive approach toward the practice of repeated border departures and re-entries undertaken solely to renew a visa exemption period. As of November 2025, travellers are permitted no more than two such trips per calendar year. Those found to be engaging in a pattern of serial border runs may be refused re-entry at the discretion of the immigration officer. Individuals intending to reside in Thailand for an extended duration are advised to seek an appropriate long-stay visa, such as the DTV or Tourist Visa.
Which visa category is most suitable for remote workers and digital nomads?+
The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is the category specifically established for location-independent professionals. It confers multiple-entry privileges over a five-year validity period, with each entry permitting a stay of up to 180 days. Eligibility requires evidence of at least 500,000 THB held in a personal bank account for a minimum of 90 consecutive days prior to application. Applicants who do not satisfy this financial criterion may wish to consider the Tourist Visa, which provides an initial authorised stay of 60 days, extendable by a further 30 days upon application to an immigration office.
What is the cost of the Thailand Privilege (Elite) visa?+
The Thailand Privilege visa programme offers multiple membership tiers, with fees ranging from 650,000 THB for the Bronze tier (5-year validity) to 5,000,000 THB for the Reserve tier (20-year validity). The Gold tier, priced at 900,000 THB for a five-year term, is frequently favoured by long-term residents seeking a straightforward, renewable residency arrangement without the administrative requirements associated with other long-stay categories.
